TRAINING:
Supporting Students to Grow in their Learning Through Self-Determination
When high school mathematics teacher Annette McDonald first learned about a new way to connect with her students by letting them make decisions for themselves, she was skeptical. After all, the curriculum was standardized, and students couldn’t just decide what they would learn. But a developing partnership with University of Kansas researchers led to a revolution in how her students could learn by giving them a choice in their goals and a structure for evaluating their progress as they worked toward achieving those goals. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT:
The Maryland Project
Launched in 2017, "MTSS and Self-Determination: Examining the Impact of Tier 1 Supports to Promote Self-Determination and Academic Outcomes for All Students" is evaluating the differential impact of varying intensities of implementation supports for general and special education teachers. Participants in the project are using the SDLMI with students with and without disabilities receiving core content instruction in inclusive, general education settings.
SERVICE FOCUS:
Assistive Technology for Kansans
Assistive Technology for Kansans (ATK) strives to improve access to and acquisition of assistive technology (AT) for individuals of all ages with disabilities and health conditions. ATK provides four core services: device demonstration, short-term equipment loan, AT reuse, and assistance in determining funding eligibility for both new and used technologies. The program also works with K-Loan to offer low interest financial loans for the purchase of AT. Through these efforts ATK works to make AT more available and accessible to individuals with disabilities and their families.
